EP 10 Preparing Your Social Media for Time Off: How to Keep it Running and Engaging

Hey there! Welcome to Social Media Sanity, the podcast that helps you maintain a balanced and mindful online presence. If you’re enjoying the content, be sure to like and subscribe to our podcast on your favorite platform to stay updated with each new episode.

In today’s episode, we tackle an often-overlooked aspect of social media success: taking time off. As business owners, unplugging and reflecting on our goals and progress is crucial. Wendy Wittis introduced me to a fantastic concept called the “personal retreat day,” which involves setting aside one day a month to disconnect from our daily routines and truly enjoy life.

But how can we ensure that our social media presence continues to thrive even while we’re on a break? Let’s dive into some action items to help you prepare your social media and keep your business running smoothly:

1. Reuse and Repurpose: Look back at your most engaging posts and high-performing videos. Repost or reschedule them to keep your content flowing. You can also create a roundup of your greatest hits, repackaging them to appear fresh and new, without creating new content.

2. Adjust Your Calls to Action (CTAs): While planning your scheduled content, avoid engaging questions that require immediate response. Instead, focus on CTAs that direct your audience to click for more information on your website or other platforms. This way, interaction isn’t necessary for accessing the information they need.

3. Update Your Calendar: Block off time on your calendar, allowing yourself a buffer when returning from a break. Give yourself space to ease back into your business routine and incorporate new ideas that may have emerged during your time off.

Consider setting up campaigns for your digital products or services to take it up a notch and make the most of your break. That way, you can continue generating income while enjoying your well-deserved rest.

Remember, fully immerse yourself when it’s time to unwind and be present in the moment. Taking breaks from your business increases creativity and excitement and offers the space to rejuvenate, ultimately benefiting your overall success.

Tamay Shannon [00:00:04]:

Welcome to Social Media Sanity, the podcast that brings you bite sized reminders and insights to navigate the world of social media. I’m your host, Tamay Shannon. In each short episode, we provide practical strategies, thought provoking questions, and permission to be true to yourself as a business owner. Join us on this journey to a mindful and purposeful online presence. Let’s dive in. Today we’re going to talk about social media, but not in the way that you probably think we are. One of the things that really lends to the success of social media, the content you create, but also the longevity of your business is taking time off and stepping away from the computer. I learned something called a personal retreat day from Wendy Wittis, and I really, really like the idea because it’s something that you set aside one day a month and you disengage from the things you normally do and take time to reflect on where you’re going, what you’re doing, where you’re at, and then also disconnected.

Tamay Shannon [00:01:18]:

Enjoy life. Just enjoy what’s out there. So whether you want to take your own personal retreat day, you want to go on vacation or you have holidays happening now or later and coming up, and you want to step away from the computer, how do you actually prepare your social media so that it continues without you, that it continues to run, and it continues to pull in leads? So that is what we’re going to cover today. The first thing that I want you to do is your content. And that might be the biggest thing that’s on your mind, right? Because you’re like, there’s so much that I have to schedule and create and do and oh, my goodness. So this is where I say reuse and repurpose. Go ahead and go back to your greatest hits. Go back to your high engaging post.

Tamay Shannon [00:02:06]:

Go back to the videos you already created and schedule those. Use those. And when you’re thinking about your content that you’re going to schedule, you can look at reusing content directly. So getting a reel that did really well or a video that did really well, and just simply reposting it, simply rescheduling it. At that time, you’re going to be out of office. You could also look at making a roundup, the greatest hit, so you can repackage the content so that seems new and fresh, but it doesn’t take as much to create because you don’t have to do a new video. So once you do that and you look at your analytics, you look at what people like and you reschedule it. I want to put this b in your bonnet.

Tamay Shannon [00:02:53]:

Make sure that let’s say, for example, you get back on a Sunday, I want you to give yourself a buffer and schedule through to Tuesday so that when you start the next day, you don’t have to go full force jumping right into business as usual. You’ll be able to ease yourself back into the flow of your business. When you’re scheduling and updating this content, you want to shift your calls to action, your CTAs, and you want to steer away from engaging content. You want to steer away from content that ask a question that what do you think about this? Or how’s this going for you? Which one’s your favorite? Because that means you’ll have to respond while you’re on vacation and we don’t want that. So I want you to steer away from content that ask questions, that ask for engagement and I want you to keep your CTAs. To sign up here, click here, find out more here. I want to keep your CTAs to where they can click and get the information they need from your website, from your LinkedIn bio, from wherever, versus having to engage and interact with you to get that information. And while you’re at it, go ahead and update your calendar.

Tamay Shannon [00:04:10]:

So the calendar that people can book with you on, make sure you update that and block off times. And again, give yourself a buffer. Don’t come back from vacation, don’t come back from the holidays, don’t come back from your break and immediately go full force into your business. Give yourself some breathing room not only to ease back into the business, but also typically when you go away and you give yourself time to think, what happens is you get a lot of ideas. So giving yourself a buffer gives you time to figure out how to incorporate those ideas into your business in a way that works for you. Now, if you want to be extra and you want to get that extra credit, then what you can do is while you’re on vacation, you can actually start or set a campaign to digital products or to services or things that you provide that don’t involve you executing. So it’s making money while you’re taking a break. It’s a beautiful thing.

Tamay Shannon [00:05:14]:

So what that looks like is, let’s say you have an ebook that you like to sell that people really like. Run a campaign for that ebook, have the call to action, buy this, do this, take that action. But I think that is a really great way to make sure you’re selling enough because sometimes we don’t sell enough, but also a great way to have that kaching happen while you’re sitting on the beach. Finally to get ready to take a break on social media, you want to be present. So when you are not in front of your computer, you’re out there having a good dinner, you’re with family, you’re on the beach, you’re hiking, whatever you’re doing, that’s not your business. Be present, enjoy it. Soak it in. Let it be the restorative break that you need.

Tamay Shannon [00:06:05]:

Because if you worry about your business, if you are upset, are you just like, oh my goodness, something wrong is going to happen, you’re not going to be able to enjoy this part of your business. And this part of your business is taking time away. Taking time away from your business actually makes you more creative, makes you more excited to return back, gives you those ideas to take you to the next level. That is the part your business needs. It’s just as important as balancing the books and delivering extra excellent service and all of that. It’s just as important taking a break. So be present when you’re taking the break in your business. And that wraps up social media sanity.
